چکیده

• Detection-based strategies significantly improved drivers yielding rates. LED and VMS conditions were helpful in reducing the vehicle-pedestrian conflicts. effective terms of drivers’ speed reduction. Do detection-based warning improve vehicle behavior at uncontrolled midblock crosswalks? Pedestrians being most vulnerable road users account for a large proportion injuries fatalities from traffic crashes. are involved around one-third whole coming crashes state Qatar. In areas with crosswalks, it is very crucial to alertness behavior. The objective this driving simulator study investigate impact pedestrian detection pavement markings on high-speed crosswalks. To end, an untreated condition (i.e. Control) was compared three treatment conditions. treated included two strategies, i.e., advance variable message sign (VMS) lights, encircled. Each tested yield/stop controlled marked crosswalk situations, i.e. vs. without present. experiment conducted using Qatar University. total, 67 volunteers possessing valid Qatari license participated study. Different analyses interactions, speed, variations acceleration/deceleration lateral position. results showed that both increasing rates up 98.4 % conflicts significantly. Furthermore, treatments motivating reduce advance. Considering findings study, we recommend as potentially solutions safety

Effect of a community-based pedestrian injury prevention program on driver yielding behavior at marked crosswalks.

BACKGROUND Few studies have comprehensively evaluated the effectiveness of multi-faceted interventions intended to improve pedestrian safety. "Watch for Me NC" is a multi-faceted, community-based pedestrian safety program that includes widespread media and public engagement in combination with enhanced law enforcement activities (i.e., police outreach and targeted pedestrian safety operations c...

Effects of pedestrian prompts on motorist yielding at crosswalks.

Pedestrian safety is a serious concern at busy intersections and pedestrian campuses across the nation. Although crosswalks and signs inform pedestrians where to cross, there is no standard protocol for pedestrians to signal drivers that they wish to use the crosswalks, except to stand in or at the crosswalk. We examined the effects of two pedestrian prompts, a raised hand and extended arm, on ...

42-47 Van Houten Feature

ITE JOURNAL / JULY 2001 A GOOD DEAL OF EVIDENCE suggests that driver inattention is a major cause of motor-vehicle crashes. When drivers do not attend to critical features of the driving environment, they cannot respond in a timely manner to threats. One way to alert drivers to the presence of potential threats is the use of flashing yellow warning beacons. However, this type of signal does not...

Warning Efficacy of Active Versus Passive Warnings for Unsignalized Intersection and Mid-Block Pedestrian Crosswalks

This study evaluated the efficacy of active versus passive warnings at uncontrolled pedestrian (ped) crosswalks (Xwalks), by comparing how these two warnings types influenced behavior of drivers approaching such Xwalks. Vehicle-Xwalk interactions were observed at 18 sites with passive, continuously flashing, or ped-activated warnings, yielding 7,305 no ped present and 596 ped present interactio...

Reducing conflicts between motor vehicles and pedestrians: the separate and combined effects of pavement markings and a sign prompt.

The effects of a symbolic "yield here to pedestrians" sign and advance yield pavement markings on pedestrian/motor vehicle conflicts, motorists' yielding behavior, and the distance motorists' yield in advance of crosswalks were evaluated at multilane crosswalks at uncontrolled T intersections. In Experiment 1, the sign, when used alone, reduced pedestrian/motor vehicle conflicts and increased m...
